Family Estate Records  (Wills)

Estate records are full of accurate details that can often help provide clues to many research road blocks.

Probate records are records created by a court after a person's death that relate to the distribution of that person's estate.. If the person left a will then the probate process was to document it's validity and see that the person's wishes were carried out. If the person didn't leave a will, then probate was used to choose an administrator to decide the distribution of the person's assets.

Depending on the time and place, you may find the following information in probate records:

wills
a list of creditors or debts
a list of the heirs (spouse, children, etc)
petitions for guardianship of children under age
list of assests or an estate inventory (location of the property described in detail)
