Researching Historic Homes

City DirectoriesCity Directories list names of people along with their place of residence, and sometimes their occupation. Some newer directories also include city and county street maps. Please take note that street names and numbers do change over time, as do city boundaries. A big benefit of city directories is that they help you to pinpoint construction dates by finding out when the address first appeared in a directory. Unfortunately, most libraries do not allow city directories to be checked out. Sometimes, you will be able to make a photocopy of the pages you need. But, if the directory is old you may not be allowed to and will have to take notes. Many city directories have been microfilmed by State Libraries. There are also many transcriptions and scanned images of city directories online. So, I recommend searching the Internet first, you may get lucky and find the city directory for your ancestors hometown online. |
