DNA Testing: Why Markers Matter
DNA Testing for Genealogical Purposes: A Basic Introduction
Family Tree DNA is the leading organization in the field of Genetic Genealogy. If you are going to buy a DNA testing kit, I highly recommend them. They will send you a DNA test kit that includes two cheek scrapers that look like cotton toothbrushes and two collection tubes where you put the used scraper. The DNA test kit also includes instructions and a release kit. The realease form is if you want them to give your contact information to someone who is an exact match for you. Family Tree DNA calls those matches - Genetic Cousins. You don't have to agree, but if you are doing genealogy research it's a great resource for finding family and relatives. Dna evidence provides the best proof for your family tree.
The most popular DNA tests for genealogy purposes are the Y chromosome and mtDNA genetic tests. Only males have a Y chromosome and it it passed down from father to son through the generations. Males and females have mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). However, mtDNA is only passed by mothers to their children. Therefore, only the daughters pass it down to their children.
Do you have Native American ancestry? DNA may give you the answer.
